Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has inaugurated the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya (PPCK) Board in Nakuru. During the inauguration, CS Kagwe congratulated the newly appointed Board chaired by Granton Samboja, emphasizing their crucial role in driving reforms within the Pyrethrum industry.
The CS also highlighted the government’s effort to revive and revitalize the pyrethrum sub-sector through strategic initiatives, including the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aiming to expand production from 4,000 acres in 2022 to 9,624 acres by 2027, increase dry flower production from 942 to 10,718 metric tons, and boost export earnings to Ksh 5.9 billion by 2027.
In attendance were AFA Director General, Dr. Bruno Linyiru, OGW, and AFA- Miraa, Fibre, Pyrethrum, and Other Industrial Crops Directorate Director, Grace Kyalo.
The Government through the Agriculture and Food Authority has made significant strides in revitalizing Kenya’s pyrethrum sub-sector through targeted initiatives. Key achievements include the development of the Crops (Pyrethrum) Regulations, 2025, currently at the Regulatory Impact Assessment stage, set to align with the repeal of the Pyrethrum Act No. 22 of 2013. This repeal, facilitated by The Pyrethrum (Repeal) Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 40 of 2024), aims to streamline regulation under the Crops Act, 2013, and is progressing at the Committee Stage in the National Assembly.
AFA has also supported farmers by procuring and distributing 1 million high-quality seedlings across Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Nakuru, and Nyandarua counties while providing 64 solar dryers to 60 farmer groups in Nakuru, Nyandarua, Bomet, and West Pokot to enhance post-harvest processing.
To address delays in flower collection and payments, AFA has promoted contract farming to foster more efficient market linkages. Additionally, the Authority has actively promoted pyrethrum-based products through field days, agricultural shows, and business linkage forums, boosting the sub-sector’s visibility and market potential.
