The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), in partnership with the Cereal Growers Association (CGA), on 5th February 2026 hosted a Wheat Field Day at Sasumua Farm in Rumuruti, Laikipia County.
The one-day event brought together large-scale wheat farmers, agribusiness stakeholders, and sector players from five major wheat-growing counties to exchange knowledge, showcase best practices, and discuss strategies to enhance wheat productivity in Kenya.
Speaking during the event, the Principal Secretary, State Department for Agriculture, Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh, reaffirmed that agriculture remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy and a key pillar under the Government’s economic recovery plan. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic wheat production to reduce reliance on imports and enhance food security.

The Principal Secretary noted that national wheat production declined from 232,506 metric tonnes in 2024 to 197,729 metric tonnes in 2025. He attributed the drop to high production costs, unfavorable weather conditions, and the use of uncertified seed.
To address these challenges, he highlighted several government interventions aimed at boosting agricultural productivity. Among them is the Fertilizer Subsidy Programme, designed to lower input costs and support farmers across the country. He encouraged farmers to adopt certified seed varieties, modern farming technologies, and climate-smart practices to enhance yields and resilience.
The Wheat Field Day provided a practical platform for farmers to interact with experts, view demonstration plots, and explore innovative solutions tailored to improving wheat production and strengthening the cereals value chain.
The event underscored AFA’s continued commitment to working collaboratively with industry partners to revitalize the wheat subsector and advance sustainable agricultural growth in Kenya.
