Sisal

Sisal is an arid and semi-arid areas (ASAL) and is mainly grown in eleven (11) counties, which include Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Baringo, Nakuru, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Homabay, Migori and Siaya. Currently, there are nine (9) sisal fibre processing factories, mainly in sisal plantation estates. About 95% of sisal fibre produced in Kenya is exported. The rest is sold and processed by local spinning factories (Teita Estates Ropes Works Division and Majani Mingi Estates Ltd- spinning factory) and cottage industries.

The crop thrives in semi-arid areas and is valued for its strong and durable fibres used in making ropes, twines, mats, and industrial products. The sub-sector, however, has faced challenges such as ageing plantations, declining global prices, and competition from synthetic substitutes.
